SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Seleukos II Kallinikos, 246-225 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 16.91 g, 9 h), in the types of Alexander the Great. Susa, circa 228. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ - ΣΕΛΕΥΚΟΥ Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right; to left and below throne, monograms. ESM 364. SC 787a. SNG Berry 1345 (this coin). Rare. Slightly rough, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Regierungsrat Dr. iur. Hans Krähenbühl, ex Leu 36, 7-8 May 1985, 176, and from the collection of Burton Y. Berry (1901-1985).

This issue is notable for briefly reintroducing the types of Alexander the Great to Seleukid coinage. It was struck during Seleukos short-lived Parthian campaign in circa 228 BC, which, like most of this king's endeavors, yielded little success.
