Forces of Galba in Spain. In the name of Augustus, 27 BC-AD 14. Denarius (Silver, 17 mm, 3.35 g, 4 h), uncertain mint in Spain. Group A.I, 3 April-2nd half of June 68. CAESAR AVGV[STVS] Laureate head of Augustus to right. Rev. DIVVS - IVLIVS Sidus Iulium: eight-rayed comet with tail upwards. BMC 49. CG 146.1 (this coin). Cohen 98 (Augustan prototype). Martin A 10. Nicolas A8. RIC 92. Very rare. Boldly struck and with a particularly impressive portrait. A few minor marks and the obverse struck slightly off center, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Dipl.-Ing. Christian Gollnow, privately acquired from Yves Gunzenreiner in March 2014.

An interesting detail about this coin is that the reverse does not actually show the comet in the center of the eight rays: what should be an orb, or a globule at least, was reduced by the artist to a mere tiny dot separating the two words of the legend.
