Rhine Legions. Anonymous, circa May/June-December 68. Denarius (Silver, 17 mm, 3.00 g, 5 h), uncertain mint in Gaul or in the Rhine Valley. 'S P Q R Group'. MARS VLTOR Mars, nude but for helmet and parazonium slung around his chest, advancing right, wielding spear in his right hand and holding shield in his left. Rev. S P Q R within oak wreath. BMC 23 and pl. 50, 13 (same dies). CG 91.2 (this coin). Cohen 414. Martin 71. Nicolas 60 and pl. II, 60 BR (same dies). RIC 54. Very rare and among the finest of only twelve known examples, only five of which are in private hands. A beautifully toned coin struck on good metal. Some corrosion and minor coppery deposits on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.
