Rhine Legions. Anonymous, circa May/June-December 68. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 4.12 g, 5 h), uncertain mint in Gaul or in the Rhine Valley. 'S P Q R Group'. [PACI] AVGVSTAE Pax-Nemesis, winged, standing right, holding winged caduceus pointing down at snake in her left hand and holding out fold of drapery below chin with her right. Rev. S P Q R within oak wreath. BMC 26 and pl. 50, 14 = Cohen p. 350, App. 2 = Martin 81 and pl. 8, 81 L = Nicolas 63 and pl. II, 63 BR = RIC 56 (same dies). CG 106.1 (this coin). Of the highest rarity, the second and finest known example. A beautifully toned piece struck on an unusually heavy flan. Minor areas of weakness, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Dipl.-Ing. Christian Gollnow, ex Künker 182, 14 March 2011, 590.

Unlike lots 1114-1115 above, this issue more closely follows its Claudian prototypes by retaining the original legend PACI AVGVSTAE. It is worth noting that the weight of 4.12 g is exceptionally high for a civil war denarius, surpassing the already heavy example in the BM (3.42 g) by a further 20 %.
