Rhine Legions. Anonymous, circa May/June-December 68. Denarius (Silver, 17 mm, 3.58 g, 6 h), uncertain mint in Gaul or in the Rhine Valley. 'SIGNA P R Group'. PAX ET LIBERTAS Clasped right hands holding winged caduceus together. Rev. SIGNA / P - R Aquila to right before lighted altar; signum on either side. BMC p. 299, *. CG 84.1 (this coin). Cohen -. Martin 66. Nicolas 95. RIC 57. Extremely rare, one of just six known examples. Minor cleaning scratches, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dipl.-Ing. Christian Gollnow, privately acquired from Frank Lagnitre in September 2015.

For a note on the connection of this coin to the 'S P Q R Group', see lot 1117 above. It is worth noting that the obverse legend PAX ET LIBERTAS clearly mirrors the slogan SALVS ET LIBERTAS on lots 1118-1120 above, whereas the type is derived from Spanish prototypes (see lots 1023-1024 above).
