Rhine Legions. In the name of Augustus, 27 BC-AD 14. Denarius (Subaeratus, 17 mm, 2.22 g, 5 h), uncertain mint in Gaul or in the Rhine Valley. Group A.IX, circa May/June-December 68. Bare head of Augustus to right. Rev. AVGVSTVS Capricorn to right, holding globe attached to rudder between front hooves and bearing cornucopiae on its back. BMC 45-46. CG 135.2 (this coin). Cohen 21 (for Augustan prototype). Martin A 2. Nicolas A2. RIC 82. Very rare. Breaks in plating, otherwise, very fine.

Fine style, solid metal and overlapping of types with issues in the name of Galba (see BMC pl. 51, 1-2) allow for the majority of this issue to be attributed to Spain. This is not the case with the few surviving plated examples of cruder style such as this one, which were certainly issued by the Rhine Legions.
