Forces of Vitellius in Gaul and in the Rhine Valley. Anonymous, 2 January-19 April 69. Denarius (Subaeratus, 16 mm, 3.23 g, 6 h), uncertain mint in Gaul or in the Rhine Valley. 'Plated Jupiter-Vesta Group'. VES[TA P R] QVIRITIVM Veiled, diademed and draped bust of Vesta to right; before, burning torch. Rev. FIDES - EXERCITVVM Clasped right hands. BMC 64. CG 8.2 (this coin). Cohen 364. Martin 8. Nicolas 7 and pl. XV, 17 B (same dies). RIC 126. Very rare, one of just twelve known examples, only four of which are in private hands. Cleaning scratches and with some breaks in plating, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dipl.-Ing. Christian Gollnow, privately acquired from Marcus Höllersberger in June 1984.

While not die linked to Bocciarelli's groupe 1 and 2, this coin is connected to them by the use of a Fides-reverse as well as by being plated. It was perhaps struck in another military mint, much like lot 1174 below.
