SICILY. Abakainon (?). Circa 450-420 BC. Hexas - Dionkion (Silver, 5 mm, 0.07 g). Acorn. Rev. Two pellets (mark of value). Boehringer -. HGC -. SNG ANS -. Apparently unpublished and unique. Extremely fine.
From a Swiss collection, formed before 2005.
The obverse of this mysterious coin is unlike anything we know from Sicily. Vaguely reminiscent of the small eagle head's from Akragas (HGC 2, 120), the obverse depicts what appears to be an acorn, a nut which is closely associated with Abakainon, a city hitherto unknown to have issued such small silver coins.
