CARIA. Knidos. Circa 490-465 BC. Drachm (Silver, 18 mm, 6.26 g, 9 h). Forepart of a roaring lion to right. Rev. Head of Aphrodite to right, wearing pearl necklace and with her hair falling down the back of her neck and tied at the end; all within incuse square. Cahn 64/2 and pl. 15, 64 (this coin, V31/R48). SNG Copenhagen 217 (same dies). A beautifully toned and very well pedigreed example of splendid late Archaic style. About extremely fine.


From the Jolimont Collection, ex Münzen & Medaillen GmbH 38, 5 June 2013, 46, from a collection formed in the mid 20th century, privately acquired from Münzhandlung Basel on 3 May 1938 and ex Münzhandlung Basel 4, 1 October 1935, 824 ('Bon style archaïque. Superbe').
