CILICIA. Uncertain. Circa 450-400 BC. Stater (Silver, 23 mm, 11.18 g, 12 h). Nude male figure standing right, wielding double-axe above his head with his right hand and grabbing tree with his left. Rev. Bull standing right; above, laurel branch; all within dotted linear square within incuse square. Roma Numismatics XIX (2020), 575 corr. (same dies, but attributed to Golgoi (?) on Cyprus). SNG Paris 441 (same reverse die). Of the highest rarity, apparently the third known example. A very interesting issue with a powerful obverse image. Struck from a slightly worn obverse die and with a minor edge crack, otherwise, extremely fine.

The attribution of this wonderful issue to Golgoi on Cyprus is tenuous, all the more so as we have no evidence this settlement ever existed organized as a polis with the right to strike coins. Thus, we prefer to stick to the original attribution of the series to an uncertain Cilician mint as suggested in SNG Paris.
