Nero, 54-68. Tessera (Lead, 37 mm, 20.41 g). Laureate and draped bust of Nero to left; before, palmette. Rev. Blank. Apparently unpublished. A beautiful and unusually large imperial tessera. The flan slightly bent, otherwise, good very fine.
This beautiful tessera of Nero differs from other 1st century tesserae in that it was struck, not cast, and in its impressive size of 37 mm, which also sets it apart from the small struck tessera in CNG's E-Auction 368 (2016), 404 (18 mm). What exactly it was made for is unclear, but the style of the die from which it was struck is remarkable and clearly derived from Nero's magnificent sestertii.
