Ferdinand II 2 Taler 1640/31 AU55 NGC, Graz mint, KM897, Dav-A3109A, MzA-138. 56.29gm. A highly peculiar, and seemingly quite rare, posthumous striking produced early in the reign of Ferdinand III though completely carrying over the dies of Ferdinand II, with just the date recut. This is made even more puzzling by the fact that distinctive dies from Ferdinand III's reign are known from Graz for this date. We are aware of just two other examples coming to auction in the last several decades: lot 50293 in our September 2007 Auction #441, and lot 795 in Auktionen Frühwald's November 2011 Auction 95. As such, a very special opportunity for series collectors. Mislabeled on the holder as Dav-A3186.
