Napoleon III gold Specimen "Exposition Universelle de Paris" Award Medal 1867 SP63 PCGS, cf. Divo-553 (different recipient). 50mm. 72.24gm. By H. Ponscarme. Awarded to R & J Beck. A highly appealing award medal from the 1867 Universal Exposition in Paris, of which only a small number of examples in gold have appeared on auction in recent decades. Richard and Joseph Beck formed an optical manufacturing company in Britain in 1843, originally named "Smith and Beck," and later renamed "R & J Beck" circa 1867. Based in London, they produced a wide array of optical products, including microscopes, telescopes, and camera lenses.
