Great Britain
Charles I gold Unite ND (1625-1626) MS61+ NGC, Tower mint (under Charles I), Cross Calvary mm, KM151.1, S-2687, N-2148, Brooker-31 var. (there, with initial mark to right of crown on reverse), Schneider-121 var. (same). 9.08gm. (cross calvary) • CAROLVS D' • G' MAG' • BRIT' • FRA' • ET' • HI' • REX •, crowned, mantled bust of Charles left, XX (denomination) behind / FLORENT CONCORDIA REGNA (cross calvary), crowned Stuart arms. A highly intriguing specimen both for the specialist of this series and for the generalist of English Civil War coinage alike. Awarded a numerical grade typically quite outside the norm for Charles' emissions, in-hand inspection quickly confirms that this is no accident--the features on the whole executed by lavishly polished dies on a full and highly regular flan. Interestingly, this specimen demonstrates a die pairing for which no match occurred in either the Brooker or Schneider collections, with the tiny cross atop Charles' crown pointing between the pellet and C in CAROLVS, while the reverse contains the proper spelling of FLORENT, and has the initial mark at the end of the legend.
