Islamic Dynasties
Ottoman Empire. Mehmed II (2nd Reign, AH 855-886 / AD 1451-1481) gold Sultani AH 883 (AD 1478/1479) UNC Details (Bent) NGC, Constantinople mint (in Turkey), cf. A-1306 (R; for type), Pere-80 var. (same), Kazan-732, Damali-Unl. (cf. Damali-7-K-A1-883 for obverse/Damali-7-K-A1-885 for reverse). 3.52gm. A notably handsome example of this famous first Ottoman gold type minted in Constantinople, showing an ideally centered strike and satin finish protected throughout the recesses. Though noted as bent on the holder, this is extremely minor and only mildly detectable on the reverse. Interestingly, Pere, ICV, and Damali list only two standard reverses for the year AH 883--one with, and one without a ligature between the final wa and beginning of bahr. Following Damali, however, only in AH 885 was a die style introduced that ligatured the end of the letter sad with ba of Sahib.
