Genoa. Republic 2 Scudi 1642-CSES AU53 NGC, KM82, Dav-LS553, CNI-IIIb.4, MIR-290/4 (R2). 75.38gm. Impressive to say the least, not just for its generally large size but also for its noteworthy preservation. The sole example of this date that we have been able to locate coming to auction in recent decades, its grade and overall survivorship is simply remarkable--aside from a few planchet cracks along the edges to indicate the difficulty of producing such an issue, wear is kept to a minimum, Madonna and the cherubs remaining expressive and evocative. At present the only certified specimen, and one that is not likely to be surpassed anytime soon.
