Umberto I gold 50 Lire 1884-R MS60 NGC, Rome mint, KM25, Mont-06 (R2), Gig-6 (R). Mintage: 2,534. The inaugural date of this only three-year, low mintage gold type, of which we have handled only a small handful of examples. Especially prone to bagmarking, resulting in many survivors receiving relatively low technical grades, this selection retains strongly Mint State details, a distinct watery flash cascading in the margins as the piece is tipped from end-to-end in hand. Though comparatively more plentiful than the next date the type was produced (1888), NGC's census shows just 9 examples of this date, compared to 32 1888's, with a similar difference at PCGS.
