UNITED KINGDOM. Victoria, 1837-1901.
Gold sovereign, 1860. London. Possible E over V in DEI.
We found only one previous auction sale of this error, St. James's Auctions #13, lot 1003 (May 2010; described as E over I in DEI). We are unable to identify the letter but can confirm that the die is the same as used to strike lot 1003 in St. James's Auction #13. We have also seen one other coin, images provided by a private collector. The die is identified by the zero in the date being of the larger type, placed very near to the 6 and extending below. There is also a thin yet distinctive die crack that runs through the entire date.
Second young head of Victoria facing left, hair tied in fillet; date below truncation; VICTORIA DEI GRATIA, with E of DEI struck over another letter, possibly a V. / Crowned shield within wreath; thistle, rose and shamrock below; BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:.
Very fine.
