El Salvador, 8 reales, R-in-beaded-circle countermark (Type IV, 1862) on a Guatemala 8 reales 1859 R, very rare, NGC VF 30, c/s XF standard. KM-99. 24.38 grams. Full countermark on a lightly worn host with contrasting toning in crevices, one of three at the VF level at NGC that are technically tied for second finest behind a single AU 53. The El Salvador Type IV-countermarked 8 reales is one of the great crown-sized rarities of Latin America, with reportedly only five pieces known, none having crossed the auction block in recent decades, hence the current example is an important opportunity and worth pursuit by astute collectors.
