Mexico City, Mexico, pillar 2 reales, Philip V, 1743 M, ex-Peterson (1979). KM-85; Cal-829. 6.22 grams. XF details, with lots of small marks and some rim damage but not overly corroded, lightly toned, valuable for its extremely rare provenance, first we have seen or heard of, with desirable pedigree linked to the late Smithsonian curator Mendel Peterson, who was known to have visited and dived on lots of wrecks around the world, earning the nickname "father of underwater archeology." Pedigreed to the Mendel Peterson collection (with small certificate), who recovered this coin from the wreck in May 1979, and accompanied by a color print of the ship by John R. Terry (1982). From: HMS Invincible, sunk in 1758 in the Solent, south of England
($200-300)
