Johannes. AE 4; Johannes; 423-425 AD, Rome, AE 4, 1.07g. RIC-1910 (R4), cf. RIC-1909 (Theodosius II, also R4). Obv: [D N IOHAN - NE]S P F AVG Pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust r., seen from front. Rx: VICTOR - [IA A]VGG Victory advancing l. holding wreath and palm; RM in exergue, E in l. field. VICTORIA AVGG is a very rare reverse type for Johannes and Theodosius at the mint of Rome: RIC names only one specimen for Theodosius, from officina E, in the Villa Giulia hoard, and two specimens for Johannes, from officinae S and Q, the first also in the Villa Giulia hoard, the second in an R. Ratto sale of 1928. The usual reverse type of these two emperors on their Rome-mint bronze coins, rated in its commonest varieties only S or R by RIC, is a slightly different Victory type combined with a Salus legend, SALVS REI PVBLICE..
