Titus as Caesar. AE 27; Titus as Caesar; 70-79 AD, Commune of Bithynia, under Gov. M. Maecius Rufus, AE 27, 19.50g. RPC-602 (9 spec.), BM-3, pl. XXIV.2 (same obv. die). Obv: AYTOKP KAISAP SEBAS OYES?ASIANO (sic) Head laureate r. Rx: E?I M MAIKIOY PO[YFOY ANTY?ATOY] Bithynia standing r. holding rudder and plow, across field BIT - YNIA. RPC lists only one specimen of this coin, in BM, that omits the final S of Vespasian\'s name on the obverse. Our coin could be only the second recorded of that variety, and appears to be from the same obverse die. Maecius Rufus\' term of office as governor of Bithynia and Pontus cannot be more closely dated within the reign of Vespasian: see G. R. Stumpf, Chronologie der Statthalter in Kleinasien, p. 211.. VF
