Antoninus Pius Kraay Overstrike. ; Antoninus Pius Kraay Overstrike; 138-161 AD, Alexandria, Egypt, Year 2 = 138/9 AD, Billon Tetradrachm, 13.62g. Dattari/Savio pl. 114, 8232 (Roma rev.), overstruck on Cologne-1296 (Bust of Serapis rev.). Obv: AYT K T AI? A[?P ANTWNINOC EV] - CEB Bare-headed, draped, cuirassed bust r.; doublestruck with the same obv. die moved c. 4 mm to left. Rx: Roma standing l., r. foot on shield, holding Victory and spear, date [L] - B across field, overstruck on type E[TO] - V[C B] Draped bust of Serapis r. wearing kalathos. As Colin Kraay was the first to recognize, overstrikes of this sort must mean that the two reverse dies in question were being applied alternately and rapidly at the same obverse die by two different workers, the overstrike occurring when a finished coin was not removed quickly enough from the obverse die, so was mistakenly struck a second time with the other reverse die by the second worker..
