Sicily, Syracuse. Tetradrachm; Sicily, Syracuse; Second Democracy, c. 460-440 BC, Tetradrachm, 17.00g. Boehringer-568 (dies 286/389, only 3 spec.). Obv: Slow quadriga driven r. by standing charioteer, above Nike flying r. to crown horses; in exergue, ketos (sea monster) r. Rx: SVRAKOSI - ON Head of Arethusa r., wearing triple taenia and pearl necklace, four dolphins around (one off flan).Boehringer-568 is an extremely rare issue since only one reverse die is recorded. For many issues of Syracuse, as many as twenty dies bearing the portrait of Arethusa are recorded, with only minor variations. This reverse die was created once and never again. Most of us who have been in the business fifty years or more have never owned this Boehringer example. EF
