ROMAN REPUBLIC. Octavius. Denarius 27 BC, Italian mint. Capture of Egypt commemorative issue. Obv. CAESAR - COS VI. Bare head right, lituus to the left. Rev. Crocodile standing right with jaws open; AEGVPTO above, CAPTA below. RIC 275. AR. 3.44 g. RR - XF+ After the battle of Actium in 30 BC, Octavian sent his troops against the remaining forces of Marcus Antonius and Cleopatra who were retrenched in Egypt. Four legions arrived from Cyrenaica under the Pinarius Scarpus' command, and defeat Marcus Antonius and his army. Marcus Antonius and Cleopatra both commit suicide, the first to maintain his honor, the second not to be paraded as captive for Octavian's triumph in Rome.
Egypt's fate is now sealed: Octavian has full control over the former Kingdom of Egypt and makes it a Roman province, maintaining its administration and organization inherited from the Lagid dynasty.
