Islands off Thrace, Thasos
Tetradrachm circa 411-340, AR 15.20 g. Ivy-wreathed head of Dionysus l. Rev. ΘΑΣΙΟΝ Heracles, wearing lion's skin headdress, kneeling r. and drawing bow; in r. field, thunderbolt. All within square frame. West, ANSNM 40, 39. Hurter Pixodaros Hoard pl. 22, 52a (this coin illustrated). Le Rider, Group p. 187 and pl. II, cf. 23.
Very rare and in unusually fine condition for this very difficult issue. A portrait of
superb style struck in high relief and with a wonderful old cabinet tone.
Minor traces of double striking on reverse, otherwise extremely fine
