KYRENAICA. Kyrene. Circa 331-322 BC. Hemistater or Drachm (Gold, 15 mm, 4.30 g, 6 h). KYPA Youth, half draped, riding horse trotting to right, holding the reins in his right hand and resting his left on the horse's neck. Rev. K-Y/P-A/N-A Silphium plant. BMC 124a. Naville 38. Very rare. Well-centered, toned and very well-struck: an unusually attractive example. Extremely fine.

The rider is shown here at what was probably the end of a race, riding slowly to calm his horse down after his exertions. The way he is rubbing the horse's neck with his left hand makes the affection the rider has for his horse very clear.
