Manuel II Palaeologus, 1391-1425. Stavraton (Silver, 26 mm, 8.04 g, 6 h), Constantinople, 1391-1394/5. IC XC Nimbate bust of Christ Pantokrator facing, raising right hand in benediction and holding Gospels in left; trefoil of pellets and B in fields flanking bust. Rev. + MANOVHΛ ΔECΠOTIC ΠAΛEOΛOΓOC / O TOKPATOP O ΠAΛEOΛOΓ (retrograde; sic) Nimbate and crowned facing bust of Manuel II. DOC -. Cf. LPC p. 160, 1 (legend). Cf. PCPC 332, sigla - (legend). Cf. SB 2548-9 (legend). Unrecorded sigla, and unpublished with this legend. Good very fine.

The legend on Manuel II's stavrata reads either + MANOVHΛ ΔECΠOTIC ΠAΛEOΛOΓOC / AVTOKRATOP ΘV XAPITI (SB 2548) or + MANOVHΛ ΔECΠOTIC O ΠAΛEOΛOΓOC / ΘV XAPITI BACIΛEVC TON PωMEON (SB 2549). Although here most of the first half of the legend in the outer ring is off the flan, we can assume it follows the standard. However, when we get to the inner ring containing the second half of the legend, it strays significantly from the two known varieties.
