Medal (Silver, 67 mm, 75.03 g, 12 h), a cast, chased and engraved medal by Pieter van Abeele (hollow and in two parts, held together by a cable border), on the repulse of Willem II's attack on Amsterdam at the end of July 1650, Amsterdam. ons hert en handt - is voor het landt = ("our heart and hand are for the fatherland") View of the city of Amsterdam from the Amstel, with ships filled with armed troops, docks, moored boats and a barge loaded with cattle; above, within clouds and rays, hand of God pointing towards ribbon bearing couplet; at the top, arms of Amsterdam. Rev. lof.Amstel.burgeri.d.in.tit.van.noot.blift.landt.en.stadt.getrou.tot.ende.vande.doot.1650.d.30.iuli = ("Praise the people of Amsterdam who in hard times remain faithful to the country and the city, until their death, 1650, 30 July") Allegorical figure of Amsterdam seated facing on piles of arms, holding liberty hat on a pole with her left hand and an olive branch with her right. An attractive and unusual two-sided medal, made from a combination of a hollow-cast obverse and an engraved disc reverse. Nicely toned. Obverse from a slightly worn mould and what may be a removed mount on the bottom, otherwise, good very fine / extremely fine.
