THE DUTCH REPUBLIC. Uncertain city, perhaps Amsterdam. Mid to late 17th century. Marriage Medal (Silver, 52 mm, 28.30 g, 12 h). Christ, his head with a rayed nimbus, seated at a table, blessing a married couple and breaking bread with them; before him on the left, a young man is seated to right and pouring wine into a cup; before him on the right, a young woman is seated left and holds a piece of bread in her right hand; on the floor, peeping out from under the table cloth is a rather annoyed looking cat. Rev. Scene of the marriage at Cana, where Christ turned water to wine. At the right of the table, Christ sits facing with, on his right, the Virgin Mary, veiled, and a young couple, and, on his left, two servants, one of whom raises his hands in amazement while the other pours wine into a vessel; on the left of the table, sits an elderly couple, both wearing pointed hats similar to those Jews were forced to wear in medieval times; before them a servant boy stands facing them and offers them a plate of food. Cf. Fredericks II, 177.385. A very rare an intriguing marriage medal, emphazising the sacraments involved. Nicely toned and very well-engraved. Good very fine.

The type on the reverse of this piece - the Marriage at Cana - is basically the same as that on the previous medal: both must have been copied from the same original, either a painting or an engraving.
