Late in his reign, Justin I felt his health failing and adopted his nephew as co-Augustus to solidify the succession. The young man ascended the throne as Flavius Justinianus, thus launching the reign of the greatest of the early Byzantine rulers. The joint reign lasted barely four months and produced only a handful of coins depicting both rulers.
