*Gaul, Baiocasses, pale gold stater, c. 100-50 BC, male head right with curved ornament before, rev., biga with human-headed horse driven right; below, boar standing right, 7.27g (B. Roth, "Ancient Gaulish Coins, including those of the Channel Islands", BNJ 1912, p. 8, 1 and pl. (1), 17, same dies; Brenot & Sheers 946, same dies; cf. D&T 2254-5 ), very fine and very rare. Provenance: E.K. Burstal Collection and almost certainly ex P.J. Prankerd Collection, Sotheby's, 15-19 November 1909, lot 316 (part). E.K. Burstal was a buyer at the Prankerd sale but lot 316, which consisted of three such staters, was bought by Baldwin's and it is presumed that the present coin was purchased from Baldwin's following the auction. Another similar coin from lot 316 in the Prankerd collection was sold recently by C.N.G., 19 January 2021, lot 837.
