Attica, Athens, silver tetradrachm, (176-175 B.C.) or revised date 144-143 B.C., (16.10 g), obv. head of Athena Parthenos to right, wearing triple crested Athenian helmet, ornamented with Pegasos, dotted border, rev. owl standing right, head facing on prostrate amphora, to right filleted thyrsos, A QE, across, to left monogram of AUK, to right monogram of DIUTA, I on the amphora, ME below amphora, all within olive wreath, (cf.S.2555, Thompson 177b [Same obverse die], example in ANS collection, HGC 4, 1602). Very fine, bright on a large flan, weak in places and very rare.
Ex John Saunders, USA dealer, December 5, 1998 in New York. Type represented in Thompson 'The New Style Coinage of Athens' as No.177 (no illustrated known example of these dies). Thompson reports 36 known tetradrachms of filleted thyrsos type from 14 obverse and 34 reverse dies. There is a difference of 32 year less between Thompson and the suggested revised chronology. This would make this issue 144-3 B.C.
