Caria, Knidos, (c.465-449 B.C.), silver drachm, (5.98 g), obv. forepart of lion to right, with open mouth, rev. head of Aphrodite to right of fine archaic style, hair in lines and bound with plain diadem, all within incuse square, (S.4833, Cahn, Knidos, No.75A [same dies, obv. V37, rev.R55A, p.218 Pl.6 same dies], cf.SNG Cop. 230 [same obverse die], SNG Fitz 4696 and Franke-Hirmer 186 [both from same obverse die]). Toned, with traces of golden highlights, good very fine and very rare.

Ex Noble Numismatics Sale 41, March 17, 1993 (lot 2171).

A scarce obverse and extremely rare reverse die, known from only 2 other examples, one sharing a common combination of dies as this piece (Westminster School example). Cahn describes only one example published from these dies.
