China Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation, Tientsin 5 Dollars 1.6.1907 Pick S381 S/M#Y13 PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45. A surviving 5 Dollar denomination from the early Tientsin branch issue, this rare note is sure to draw a crowd. Kept in an excellent state of preservation, this beauty shares the second finest grade of only six notes registered in the PMG Population Report. A distinctive design was used for this grandly sized note for the treaty port of Tientsin, with scenes of farming, trade and a gate on the face. Tientsin was one of the first treaty ports opened in China to foreign traders. Because of its proximity to Beijing, it was a major area of operation for British and French traders, who were later joined by Germans in the Empire era. As the currency in circulation varied between the cities, a separate design had to be issued, especially by large banks such as the HSBC.
