CHINA. Tang Dynasty. Cash, ND (649-83). Emperor Gao Zong. Graded "72 (05)" by GBCA.
Hartill-14.100. Diameter: 25.6mm; Weight: 4.0 gms. Obverse: "Qian Feng Quan Bao"; Reverse: Blank. A fascinating piece of numismatic history, according to Hartill, this cash was cast in 666 A.D. to alleviate a copper cash shortage and was equivalent in value to 10 old cash coins. This rate of exchange relative to the weight of the coin led to extensive forgery, and this issue was withdrawn after a year. This example has been graded "72" by Gongbo Historical Coins Authentication Company, and bears signs of its age with green and brown encrustation on both the fields and raised elements. Nevertheless, all characters are clearly visible and rims intact, with a story that is exceptional.
Estimate: $150 - $300
