CHINA. Copper Dollar Pattern, Year 3 (1914). NGC MS-62 Brown.
K-651X; KM-Pn37. A RARELY encountered off-metal pattern striking in copper, this Yuan Shih-kai specimen presents dazzling, highly lustrous fields along with a needle-sharp strike and alluring red-brown surfaces. Some hints of cobalt and violet further accentuate the brown, making this example a must for the advanced collector of the "big head" series, ever-increasing in popularity. A similar piece--in a newer generation PCGS SPECIMEN-63 holder--realized a total of $156,000 in our recent September Hong Kong auction (lot # 21237), illustrating the heights to which the present comparable example--seemingly a bit conservatively graded in the opinion of this cataloger--can undoubtedly soar.

Ex: Chirico Collection.

Estimate: $60000 - $80000
