CHINA. Dollar, Year 10 (1921). Tientsin Mint. NGC MS-65.
L&M-864; K-676; Hsu-19; WS-0101. Pavilion type with legend at the bottom of the reverse. About as breathtaking as a coin can be, this absolute stunner of a Gem is so amazing that words can scarcely describe it. Lightly colored garnet and sapphire toning radiates around this special commemorative issue. There is an almost cameo appearance to this piece, with mirrored fields on the obverse and some frosting on the portrait of Hsu Shih Chang. Made to be given out at the opening of the Peking Union Medical College these exceptionally popular issues are believed to have been patterns and were previously though to celebrate the 67th birthday of Hsu. This RARE issue is tied for the second finest NGC has ever seen, and only one example surpasses it at MS-66.

An incredibly popular and desirable type believed to have been a pattern issue, it now appears that these were, in fact, more medallic in nature, and meant to be given out upon the opening of the Peking Union Medical College (PUMC). Initially designed with a blank field below the pavilion for recipients' names to be engraved, the design was altered to contain the three struck characters instead, as the engraving proved difficult on the initial batch.

Estimate: $30000 - $40000
