CHINA. Fantasy "Soviet" Silver Dollar, ND ("ca. 1930"). CHOICE VERY FINE; Countermark: EXTREMELY FINE.
L&M-884. Diameter: 38.5mm; Weight: 26.63 gms. Utilizing a Year 3 (1914) Yuan Shih-kai Dollar as the host coin, these Soviet countermark issues have been ascribed to have been produced ca. 1930. L&M, however, concedes that the type itself is highly in doubt, with neither NGC nor PCGS agreeing to certify these issues. It is much more likely that this "coinage" is, in fact, a fantasy issue meant to entice collectors in what is a particularly fascinating period of Chinese numismatics.
From the Hobart Collection.
Estimate: $100 - $200
