Spanish Colony. Alfonso XII gold 4 Pesos 1885 XF Details (Repaired) PCGS, Manila mint, KM151, Cal-128, Cay-17572, Basso-71. Mintage: 5,083. An undeniable key date of all Alfonso XII coinage and the last date of his reign before his untimely death at age 27 to chronic disease. A product of the Long Depression, the period of global economic weakness affecting most industrial nations throughout the late 19th century, further exacerbated by the abandonment of the bimetallic standard for the gold standard. This created substantially lower mintage figures for the Philippines in the 1880s due to the dwindling gold reserves of the Bank of Spain, as more gold was now being siphoned into Spanish issues because of the shift in monetary system. The result is the incredibly scarce issue at hand, appearing at auction less than ten times in the last few decades, expressing uniform sun-yellow appearances and only mild friction and contact marks to define the grade. A small field inconsistency to the left of the engraver's initials finds itself the likely cause for the "Repaired" designation. Generally seen with great fanfare for both Spanish and Philippines collectors as the last gold coin produced by the colony and as such, will demand special attention from bidders.
