Qing Dynasty. Wen Zong (Xian Feng) 100 Cash ND (1853-1855) XF (Chopmark), Fuzhou mint (Fukien Province), FD-2526, Hartill-22.784, Jen-Unl., Shanghai Museum-1931. 71mm. 175.68gm. A coin of instantly imposing status, standing as the heaviest issue produced during the Imperial Period. Following as a consequence of both the proliferation of provincial mints during the Xian Feng reign and the rapid vacillations of monetary devaluation and inflation that had long plagued the Chinese monetary system, the multiple Cash coins of the mid-19th century quickly diverged in weight from what was appropriate for their face value. The largest discrepancies occurred in Fukien, culminating in the minting of the present type at a weight of 5 Treasury Ounces (Taels). Hartill notes that chopmarks, usually only found on silver coins, are a common feature of the large coins of the province. While file marks appear prominently particularly on the rims of this piece, general wear is kept to a minimum, an even cocoa brown color decorating the surfaces and producing a solidly attractive visual appeal.
