Victoria tin Specimen "Keying Junk" Medal 1848 SP55 PCGS, BHM-2317. 45mm. By Thomas Halliday. An intriguing medal in tin bearing the portrait of Mandarin passenger Hesing (Xi Sheng), commemorating the voyage of the three-masted junk "Keying," named after the Manchu statesman of the Qing dynasty and conductor of the Treaty of Nanking which ended the First Opium War with Britain in 1842. Struck with impressive relief and likely for the Keying's exhibition in British waters, where it was purportedly the first Chinese ship to reach the region. Assigned an SP55 designation likely from mild cabinet friction witnessed to Hesing's portrait, we still anticipate elevated bidding for this enigmatic issue.
