A markedly rare subvariety of this already comparatively fleeting minor denomination for the design type, diagnosable by Yuan Shih-kai's pronounced large ear. Assigned a catalog value over 10 times higher than the standard Tientsin type by the Illustrated Catalogue of Chinese Gold & Silver Coins, we have offered only one example previously. The noted tooling appears as an attempt to remove some wheel marks over Yuan Shih-kai's portrait.
