Laureate head right / Roma (or Athena) seated left on throne, holding Nike in her outstretched hand and holding long scepter, shield at side behind her; KB/L (date) to left. Köln 2207; Dattari (Savio) 3861; K&G 41.29; RPC IV Online 14191; Emmett 2521.22. Dark brown patina. Near VF.
From the Rocky Mountain Collection of Alexandrian Coins.
Traditionally attributed as Athena on the reverse, RPC suggests that it must be Roma due to the lack of aegis and that she holds a scepter and not a spear. Of the 70 specimens cited at RPC very few are definitive, only a handful show the top of the scepter conclusively but those that do show a globe and not a spear-tip.
