FRANCE, Second Republic. 1848-1852. CU 25 Centimes essai de module (15mm, 1.02 g, 6h). Paris mint. Dies by Barre. Struck circa 1848-1851 (or circa 1870s?). Head of Liberty left, wearing crown decorated with cherubs clasping hands / MODULE/ DE LA PIECE/ DE/ 25 CENT. Mazzard – (but cf. 1382 bis a for obv.). Brown surfaces. Near EF. Rare.

From the J. Eric Engstrom Collection, purchased from Hammer, February 1979.

Though the charming obverse bust was initially created for the Concours monetaire of 1848, it was reused for several rounds of technical essais by the Paris mint. In 1851, the obverse was used for a series of trial strikes for coin presses produced for the Chilean mint at Santiago (Mazzard 1382). After the establishment of the Third Republic, old dies of the First and Second Republics were used to strike essais, including several by Barre with a similar reverse legend (Mazzard 2225)
