Ancients
L. Cossutius C.f. Sabula (ca. 74/72 BC). AR denarius (19mm, 4.02 gm, 4h). NGC Choice VF★ 5/5 - 5/5. Rome. SABVLA, head of Medusa left, winged, and entwined with serpents / L•COSSVTI•C•F, Bellerophon riding Pegasus right, hurling spear with right hand; XVIIII behind. Crawford 395/1. Sydenham 790. Cossutia 1.

From the Rockport Collection. Privately purchased from Heritage Auctions in the 1980s. Sold with original custom holder listing older catalog references.

Nothing is known of the moneyer or his family history other than that he was equestrian, and not senatorial, rank. The types of Medusa and Bellerophon suggest some relation with Corinth, and perhaps an ancestor filled a position in Greece, but this is purely conjecture. The issue was not large, with XXXXII being the highest die-number, and the coins are relatively scarce today.
