Ancients
Lucius Verus (AD 161-169). AE limes denarius (18mm, 2.73 gm, 5h). NGC XF 4/5 - 3/5. Ancient counterfeit of Rome, AD 169. DIVVS-VERVS, bare head of Divus Lucius Verus right / CONSECRATIO, four-tiered funeral pyre, decorated with garlands and surmounted with facing quadriga. RIC III (Marcus Aurelius) 596b for prototype issues.

From the Rockport Collection. Privately purchased from Heritage Auctions in the 1980s. Sold with original custom holder listing older catalog references.

These enigmatic little pieces belong to a group of coins referred to as limes denarii, limes falsa or AE denarii. There are numerous theories as to their purpose: some believe they were minted in the outskirts of the Roman Empire to circulate there; others contend they are non-Roman imitative (barbarous) types. This cataloger believes they were made for the soldiers defending the outer regions of the empire, paid to them in lieu of silver, in the event the territory was lost and would not have not enriched an enemy victor of a lost region with silver or gold. Upon return, these AE pieces could in turn be redeemed for equivalent AR denarii, just as US soldiers used scrip during foreign wars. We will probably never know their purpose, but they can be found in excellent condition and are very collectable.
