INDIA, Post-Mauryan (Ganges Valley). Kausambi. Circa 3rd century BC. AE (Bronze, 25 mm, 6.36 g, 12 h). The goddess Lakshmi standing facing, her head resembling a lotus flower; to left and right, elephant standing on short columns, pouring water on Lakshmi's head out of their trunks. Rev. Tree in railing. Apparently unpublished save for its previous auction appearance. Very fine.

From a German collection of Indian coins, ex Leu Web Auction 13, 15-16 August 2020, 653.

This is the earliest depiction of Abhisheka Lakshmi on a coin. The goddess is flanked by two elephants anointing her with water, while her head has the shape of a blooming and flourishing lotus flower, symbolizing the wealth and prosperity that Lakshmi will bring to her devotees in return for their prayers.
