CAPPADOCIA. Caesaraea-Eusebia. Commodus, as Caesar, 166-177. Tridrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 9.00 g, 12 h), 175-176. ΚΟΜΜΟΔⲰ ΚΑΙϹ ϹЄΒ ΥΙⲰ Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Commodus to right. Rev. ΓЄΡΜΑΝ ϹΑΡΜ-ΑΤ Tetrastyle temple set on podium of three steps; within, statue of Roma standing front, head to left, holding spear in her left hand and shield set on ground with her right; in pediment, eagle with spread wings. Ganschow 290a. RPC IV.3 online 7057. Rare. A beautiful example of this interesting victory issue. The obverse struck slightly off center, otherwise, good very fine.


The reverse legend on this issue refers to the imperial victories in the Marcomannic Wars, which were celebrated in a joint triumph of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus in Rome on 23 December 176.
