Q. Curtius, 116-115 BC. Denarius (Silver, 20 mm, 3.86 g, 4 h), with M. Silanus, Rome. Q•CVRT Head of Roma to right, wearing crested and winged helmet; behind, X (mark of value). Rev. M SILA / ROMA Jupiter driving fast quadriga to right, hurling thunderbolt with his right hand and holding scepter and reins in his left. Babelon (Curtia) 2 and (Junia) 9. Crawford 285/2. RBW 1114. Sydenham 537. Light scratches, otherwise, very fine.


From the Red Ox Collection and the collection of the Czech musician Adolf Picek (circa 1885-1978), and formerly in the possession of an Italian banker, whose life was saved by Mr. Picek in the Battles of the Piave River on the Italian Front in 1917-1918 and who presented his savior with 'four socks of old coins' in reward.
